DINSMORE — The community of Dinsmore was alive with the sounds of volleyball on Saturday, Sept. 27.
A lot of volleyball.
That’s because Dinsmore Composite School hosted its annual Rock the Block invitational event, which saw volleyball action taking place at both the local rink as well as the school gym, with four divisions keeping the courts busy all day.
Male and female teams played in the event at both the junior and senior levels, making for four divisions providing volleyball action throughout the day, with the hosting Dinsmore teams welcoming rosters from Outlook, Beechy, Elrose, Davidson, Kenaston, Biggar, Plenty, Cabri and Eston.
The results of the day saw the following action take place:
Beginning with the senior boys’ tournament, LCBI and Dinsmore set the pace with 7-1 and 6-2 records, respectively. Cabri finished 4-4, Eston at 3-5, and Davidson last at 1-7. In the semis, LCBI took down Eston, but Cabri beat Dinsmore in upset fashion, and then Cabri defied the odds again to beat LCBI and take the gold.
The senior girls’ tournament was similar as Kenaston/Loreburn ran the table with an 8-0 record, LCBI White coming in second at 6-2, Dinsmore/Elrose at 4-4, LCBI Red finishing 2-6, while Plenty went winless at 0-8. Kenaston/Loreburn and LCBI White met in the finals, where Kenaston/Loreburn took the win in straight sets.
On the junior side of things, the girls’ competition saw Davidson go undefeated at 8-0 to lead the way over 5-3 Beechy, 4-4 Dinsmore, 3-5 Kenaston and 0-8 Biggar. Davidson beat Kenaston to get into the finals, taking on Dinsmore after an upset of Beechy, though the host team fell just short in a three-set loss to Davidson.
The junior boys’ tournament was where the home team shined, with Dinsmore leading the way in the round robin with a 7-1 record, Beechy in second at 5-3 ahead of 4-4 Outlook, 3-5 Elrose and 1-7 Davidson. Dinsmore beat Elrose while Beechy defeated Outlook to advance to the finals, and then Dinsmore emerged victorious in two sets to earn the win.
Pointing to the dedication of Dinsmore teachers and volunteers in order to make the day possible, the school’s athletic director, Lance Morrison, provided a message with the game results and thanked everyone for making this year’s Rock the Block such a success.
“I would like to thank the Dinsmore staff, students, parents, and community for their support in putting on this very large event,” said Lance. “This event was held on the same day as our town-wide garage sale, the Kinette Fall Market and the Dinsmore Library book sale. Thank you to everyone that attended and supported Rock the Block this year. A final thank-you to my wife, Mrs. Shauna Morrison, who organized and cooked most of the food for the tournament, as she and the rest of the volunteers fed 500 people throughout the entire day.”
Morrison also sent good wishes to all teams on the rest of their respective seasons.
