One was a Rider. One was a Blue Bomber. Now they’re on the same team

'Surprisingly, the trash talk has been kept to a minimum around the police station this week.'

REGINA — The Regina Police Service has let its social media followers know about two members who have more than a little interest in the annual Labour Day Classic between the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Superintendent Kelly Trithart and Sergeant Cory Olynick were once team members of the Riders and the Blue Bombers, respectively. Now they are on the same team - serving the citizens of Regina, states the RPS Facebook page.

Regina-raised Olynick played from 2004 to 2005 with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers before an injury brought a premature end to his career.

Olynick -- a 5-foot-11, 210 pound fullback and former member of the Regina Junior Rams -- played 10 games with the Bombers in 2004 and saw most of his action on special teams, recording three tackles on the kick and punt return unit.

A torn achilles tendon saw Olynick miss the 2005 season and he opted to retire prior to the 2006 campaign, saying at the time that he hoped to catch on with the Regina Police Service.

Trithart originally hails from Weyburn and was drafted by the Roughriders in the seventh round, 52nd overall in 1989. A 5-foot-11, 215 pound linebacker, he played parts of five seasons with Saskatchewan and had a career-high five tackles -- four on special teams -- during the 1992 season.  Trithart finished his career with eight total tackles, seven on special teams.

He joined the Regina Police Service in 1997.

The RPS Facebook post states, "As their former teams get set for the annual Labour Day Classic showdown on Sunday, these two prove that teamwork wins off the field too. (Surprisingly, the trash talk has been kept to a minimum around the police station this week)."
