2025 Canada Summer Games Recap: Saskatchewan finishes top two in diving, win two silver in shot put

Team Sask doubles medal haul to eight on first day of Week 2, with two gold, three silver and three bronze

ST. JOHN’S -- After getting off to a bit of a slow start in Week 1 of the 2025 Canada Summer Games, Team Saskatchewan didn’t take long to get things rolling once the second half began.

Saskatchewan doubled their medal count on the first full day of competition in Week 2, finishing top two on the podium in diving and winning a pair of medals in shot put. 

Regina’s Lila Stewart took top spot in the women’s artistic diving event, recording 221.70 points to win Saskatchewan’s second gold at the Games. Fellow Regina competitor Isa Koop was right beside her on the podium, taking silver with 198.15 points.

Over in the field events, Fort Saskatchewan’s Nathan Pinno had a throw of 16.48 to win silver, while Regina’s David Lipton recorded 421 to take second in the Men’s Para shot put.

Artistic Swimming

North Battleford’s Morgan Vaughn is in seventh place with 205.864 points and Warman’s Natalia Hadland is in eighth place with 190.654 points after the technical routine.

The free routine takes place on Thursday, with the combined score between the two determining medal placings.

Athletics

Men’s 100 metres: Saskatoon’s Williams (10.50) tied for the third fastest time in the heats, Femi Akinloye (10.60) was seventh fastest, both will race in the Medal Heat on Friday.

Women’s 100 metres: Saskatoon’s Selena Keyowski (12:00) advanced to the Medal Heat, Saskatoon’s Timi Adelugba (12:25) advanced to the Consolation Heat.

Special Olympics Men’s 100 metres: Assiniboia’s Brayden Giraudier (11.93) advanced to the Medal Heat, Assiniboia’s Kyle Giraudier (12.76) advanced to the Consolation Heat.

Para Ambulatory Men’s 100m -- Saskatoon’s Brendan Cote-Williamson finished first in the preliminary round heat with 783 points and will be a medal favourite in the Medal Heat on Friday.

Men’s 400 metres: Saskatoon’s Michael Hussey (49.13) advances to the Medal Heat, Regina’s Daniel Eiswerth (50.22) advanced to the Consolation Heat.

Women’s 400 metres: Langham’s Tayen Wener (56.00) and Dilke’s Hallee Woodhouse (55.91) both won their respective heat races and advance to the Medal Heat. 

Men’s 1,500 metres: Regina’s Jonathan Podielski (3:53.27) tied for first in his heat and advanced to the Medal Heat, Regina’s Brett MacLean (4:02.04) does not advance.

Women’s 1,500 metres: Moose Jaw’s Katie Rogers (4:42.12) and Regina’s Hannah Gates (4:48.50) both advance to the Medal Heat.

Women’s Wheelchair 1,500 metres: Grayson’s Ayva Delainey finished in fifth place in the Medal Heat.

Men’s 400 metre hurdles: Swift Current’s Carter Tuplin (55.93) and Rowan Reimer (55.94) advanced to the Medal Heat.

Women’s 400 metre hurdles: Saskatoon’s Happy Oluwasikun (1:02.71) advanced to the Medal Heat with the third-best time overall.

Men’s 4x100m relay: Saskatchewan (42.07) finished eighth in the heats and advance to the Medal Heat.

Women’s Long Jump: Prince Albert’s Shelaine Pritchard (5.76 metres) has the best distance in qualification and joins Saskatoon’s Chelsea Ells (5.58 metres) in the Medal Heat on Saturday.

Women’s Pole Vault: Saskatoon’s Kiara Stone (3.20 metres) finished in fifth place, Saskatoon’s Megan Deere did not record a height.

Women’s Hammer: Saskatoon’s Jessica McBride (44.55 metres) finished eighth, Saskatoon’s Zaynna Willoughby (40.23 metres) finished 12th.

Women’s Javelin: Nipawin’s Kira Comfort (29.92 metres) finished 13th, Big River’s Jessamy Sundby (28.93 metres) finished 14th.

Men’s Shot Put: Fort Saskatchewan’s Nathan Pinno (16.48 metres) finished second to claim the silver medal. 

Men’s Para Shot Put: Regina’s David Lipton recorded 421 points to finish in second place and win silver.

Decathlon: After the 100 metres, shot put, high jump, 400 metres, 110m hurdles and discus, Saskatoon’s Logan Kok is in second place with 4,083 points. Saskatoon’s Josh Tam (3,457 points) is in eighth place. The long jump, pole vault, javelin and 1,500 metres take place Wednesday.

Women’s Baseball

Saskatchewan got off to a great start against Manitoba, scoring three runs in each of the first two innings and building an 8-0 lead through four before holding off a late-game comeback for an 8-5 win.

Regina’s Victoria Bateman led Team Sask’s offence, going 2-for-3 with three runs scored, while Saskatoon’s Taylor Schueller crossed the plate twice and Saskatoon’s Paisley McHarg knocked in a pair of runs.

Saskatoon’s Makenna Dobrowolsky started on the mound and allowed five runs on nine hits over six innings of work, Saskatoon’s Paisley McHarg closed things out and allowed two hits in the final inning.

Saskatchewan faces Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick in round robin games Wednesday.

Men’s Box Lacrosse

Team Sask couldn’t have asked for a better start against Prince Edward Island, taking an 8-0 lead out of the first period and and leading 16-0 through two, going on to an 18-1 win

Scoring was remarkably spread out, with 10 different players hitting the scoresheet.

Moose Jaw’s Kashton Smith led the way with three goals and eight points, while Saskatoon’s Easton Luoma contributed three goals and three assists. Saskatoon’s Samuel Maxin scored twice and had three helpers, Saskatoon’s Mason Schreffler, Ryder LaRose and Beck Dickinson all had a pair goals. Weyburn’s Quinton Stinson, Moose Jaw’s Chase Folk, Kaleb Crossman and Saskatoon’s James Mahussier had their other markers.

Saskatchewan continues the round robin against Manitoba and New Brunswick on Wednesday.

Diving

Women’s Artistic: Regina’s Lila Stewart recorded 221.70 points to finish in first place and win gold, Isa Koop finished with 198.15 points to finish in second and win silver. Black Point’s Anika Park (180.15) finished 10th.

Men’s Artistic: Saskatoon’s Casey Spilchak (191.40) finished seventh, Regina’s Freddie Moffat (188.60) finished seventh and Saskatoon’s Kash Tarasoff (188.20) finished eighth.

Golf

Men’s Individual: Saskatoon’s Ethan Hunter shot an opening round 74 and is tied for fifth place heading into Wednesday’s second round. Saskatoon’s Ryan Mosher shot 77 and is tied for 11th.

Women’s Individual: Saskatoon’s Grace Odnokon shot 81 in the first round and is tied for 10th. Regina’s Tayla Perry shot 94 and is tied for 17th.

Mixed Team: Saskatchewan’s 149 total is good enough for fifth place.

Women’s Soccer

Saskatchewan lost their opening game 5-1 to Alberta.

Saskatoon’s Alice Turnbull scored Team Sask’s lone goal in the 50th minute.

Saskatchewan closes out their round robin on Wednesday when they take on Newfoundland.

Men’s Volleyball

Team Sask got off to a good start, taking a 25-22, 25-12, 25-21 win over Newfoundland in their opening contest.

They next face B.C. on Wednesday and will finish off the preliminary round against Quebec on Thursday.

Women’s Volleyball

Saskatchewan swept Quebec in their first game of the tournament, taking a 25-23, 25-16, 28-26 victory.

Team Sask faces New Brunswick on Wednesday and cap the round robin against Manitoba on Thursday.
