Anton Amundrud set new career highs in passing yards and touchdowns Saturday afternoon, as the U SPORTS No. 5-ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies handed the Calgary Dinos a 45-22 loss at home.
The Huskies recorded over 600 yards of total offence for the second time this season, improving to 4-1. The victory maintains their lead in the conference standings, with the Dogs owning the tiebreaker over the Regina Rams following last week's head-to-head win.
It was a tough start for the Huskies, who punted and fumbled twice in their opening four possessions. The Dinos took an 8-0 lead on a David Jordan rushing major.
Despite the early turnovers, the Saskatchewan defence held firm, allowing just 37 yards in the opening frame.
Late in the opening quarter, the Huskie offence found life. Amundrud split a pair of defenders with a pinpoint pass to Thomas Jule, who took the ball 58 yards into the Calgary endzone.
For Jule, a second-year receiver, the touchdown was the first of his career and came on just his ninth career reception. Jule would finish the game with 112 yards, more than doubling his career total.
After forcing a Calgary punt to open the second quarter, Amundrud and the Huskie offence began to find their rhythm. Amundrud connected on three pass attempts before finding a wide-open Daniel Wiebe for a 37-yard score and the lead.
Under ninety seconds later, the offence was back on the field after the Saskatchewan defence held Calgary to a quick two-and-out.
The drive started with an early third-and-one conversion from Jake Farrell before an Amundrud check down to Ryker Frank turned into a 29-yard gain featuring a vicious stiff arm from the fifth-year ball carrier.
Frank would finish the day with 213 total yards on 16 touches, as the veteran averaged 11.8 yards per carry and 18 yards per reception.
Two plays later, the ball was back in the hands of Wiebe after Amundrud found his favourite target wide open in the end zone from 18 yards out, giving the Dogs a two-score advantage.
Following a Calgary field goal to cut the lead to ten, Lukas Scott and the Huskies would kick one of their own as time expired in the half to head into the locker room with a 24-11 lead.
After the Dinos opened the third quarter with a field goal, the teams’ defences took over as they would combine for six consecutive punts to enter the final frame.
On their first drive in the fourth quarter, the Huskies' offence resumed its first-half production. Amundrud connected on five passes and led a 7-play, 91-yard scoring drive, ending in his third touchdown pass to Wiebe to put the Dogs ahead 31-14.
The score set a new single-game career-high for Wiebe, who now has six touchdowns this season, which leads the conference. With 151 yards on the day, Wiebe moved up the U SPORTS rankings and now trails only Laurier receiver Ethan Jordan with 132.6 yards per game in 2025.
Following another two-and-out forced by the Huskie defence, it took four plays for the Dogs to get back in the endzone. Amundrud connected with Dawson Lennea on a 39-yard score, with the third-year receiver making a one-handed grab for his second major of the season.
The touchdown throw was Amundrud's fifth of the day, with the fourth-year pivot setting a new single-game career best and moving into third in the nation with 14 touchdown passes just past the midway point of the campaign. Amundrud is now just one short of his single-season high and moves into 5th-place in the Huskie record books with 42 in his career.
Despite scoring their fifth major of the day, the offence showed no signs of slowing down. On the first play of their next possession, Frank took the Dogs out of the shadow of their own endzone with a 56-yard scamper to the Dinos' 31-yard line. On the ensuing play, fourth-year running back Kayden Miller finished the job, running untouched to the goal line for his first score of the season.
With the game already out of reach, the Dinos would close things out with a touchdown and two-point convert in the final minute for a final score of Saskatchewan 45 Calgary 22.
The Huskies will look to make it three wins in a row next week, as they return home to host the Alberta Golden Bears (1-4) Saturday night (Oct. 4) at Griffiths Stadium.
