Corey Mace: We like adversity

The new Saskatchewan Roughrider bench boss picked up his first win against the Elks.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders took their fans on a rollercoaster journey when they beat the Edmonton Elks 29-21 last Saturday.

The head coach for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Corey Mace, was on Monday's edition of the SportsCage, and he reflected on his first regular-season win.

"We like adversity… I prefer it because that's the reality of the game," Mace explained to host Brendan McGuire.

A notable moment from the game was when the Riders chose to run the ball with AJ Ouellete, who fumbled the ball with 28 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

When pressed about his reaction to that particular situation, Coach Mace stressed that it was a learning situation for him, but he was happy with how everything played out.

"It was unfortunate, but that's football," described Mace. "But it goes to speak again, no panic,  the defence ran back out there and said, hey, we got your back."

Mace made sure to elaborate on the subject further.

"So, you know, the way it played out, to be honest with you, I was more pleased that it played out like that."

The Rider's defence held out against Mcleod Bethel Thompson and the Edmonton Elks' last-ditch effort, breaking up a hailmary pass to end the game.

Another memorable moment for Rider fans was when Offensive Lineman Logan Ferland was ejected after punching an Elks player in the second half.

When asked about this situation, Coach Mace pointed out that the play would not define the team.

"Learning lessons for us, not who we want to be, not who we're going to be," said Mace.

Even though it was Mace's first regular-season win as head coach, he is not resting on his laurels.

"I'm smelling Hamilton's roses currently. So that time's over, babe, we're on to the next one,"

Mace chuckled.
