SASKATOON -- The Saskatoon Berries have set the record for the most wins in the Western Canadian Baseball League regular season, and in dramatic fashion at that.

Mason Roell hit a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Berries a 14-10 victory over the Medicine Hat Mavericks in Saskatoon on Sunday afternoon.

Here's how the moment looked and sounded:

The victory gives Saskatoon 45 wins on the season, one ahead of the record of 44 set by the Sylvan Lake Gulls in 2024.

It looked as if the Berries might take their quest to their final game of the season earlier in the 10th inning, as the Mavericks had scored three in the top of the frame to take a 10-7 lead.

Ethan Murdoch got things started for the Berries in their half of the 10th, lLeading off with a two-run home run. Four batters later, Cory Wouters would hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Jalen Freeman with the tying run and after an intentional walk to Abiam Medina loaded the bases, Roell would hit his round-tripper to finish things off.

It had been a back-and-forth game to that point, as Medicine Hat took a 6-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh, where Saskatoon would put up a pair of runs. They’d take their first lead of the game with two more runs in the bottom of the eighth, but Medicine Hat would reply with the tying run in the ninth, setting up the extra inning.

Carter Beck went 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI for the Berries, while Nathan Houston hit a home run and crossed the plate twice.

Carter Roth was 5-for-5 with two runs for Medicine Hat, Jaden Babiuk 4-for-5 with two RBI.

Klevert Martina started for Saskatoon and allowed a single run on three hits over four innings. Turner Zdunich ended up with the win after pitching the 10th.

Tyler Spruiell also had a good start for the Mavericks, giving up a single run and two hits in four innings. Like Saskatoon, they used three relievers to get to the 10th, where Degan Sanders would take the loss.

Saskatoon is now 45-9 on the season, Medicine Hat falls to 34-20 and will finish second in the East Division.

The teams both have one game remaining in the regular season and will be in action on Monday at 1 p.m. at NexGen Field.

Be sure to check back later for a look at the games between Moose Jaw and Swift Current (4 p.m.) and Weyburn and Regina (7:05 p.m.) later Sunday.
